Please make yourself aware of and abide by the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct. Key considerations include:
Acting as an ambassador of the sport of orienteering at all times and considering how your actions may appear in the eyes of landowners or members of the public;
Observing social distancing at all times;
Use your own hand sanitizer on arrival and departure.
Please limit your time at the event to a minimum to avoid unnecessary contact with others.
Online entry only. No entry on the day.
EMIT Touch-free on loan from EMIT UK. Free eTag hire.
Control descriptions will be on the map but, if you want to have a separate copy, they can be downloaded from the SOC website. Note that on the Blue course, the control descriptions obscure the legend. If you want to familiarise yourself with the symbols used on the map, see the previous event on RouteGadget. A cross in the control descriptions represents a platform (brown triangle) on the map.
Scale 1:10 000, Contour interval 5m. Mapped by various SOC mappers, selected updates 2017 by Julia Loring and Norman Wilson.
Minor modifications were made to the map for the event but the majority of the vegetation has not been updated and should not be relied upon for fine navigation. That said, in many places as plantations have matured, the runnability is actually better than the map suggests. There is still significant bracken in parts of the area but it is dead and should yield to the determined runner! As you might expect given recent weather, the marshes are very wet and courses have been planned so that they can be avoided. Please respect the two out-of-bounds areas marked on the map.
The Anderwood area is very popular with walkers, dog walkers,cyclists and horse riders so please be respectful of the general public and their animals.
Portaloo available in BBQ area. Public toilets are closed.
Clothing and equipment
Full leg cover and footwear suitable for the terrain must be worn. Whistles must be carried. In adverse weather we may ask you to wear a cagoule or similar waterproof top. Please bring your own water or other drinks.
Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead and under control at all times.
In the BBQ area, about 300m from the car park. Use the sanitizer before approaching the "washing line". This will have your named bag in time order with your map and eTag in it. Take your bag. Remove the eTag and map, drop the bag in the crate. The map will be sealed and you are on trust not to unseal it before you start (as per a relay or mass start score event). There is no key drop for this event.
The start is about 100m from the BBQ area. Go through the gate into the forest and head up the track to start banner. Please ensure that you remain socially distanced as you approach the start. A maximum of five competitors in the start area at any one time. Follow the directions of the start marshall.
On the Course
Its a touch free event - please do not touch the controls, not even with your eTag. Just hover your wrist above the control and check that the eTag flashes. Be aware of other competitors and other users. Keep your distance at all times. Give way at controls, be patient.
Finish and Download
After punching at the Finish there is a 200m walk back to the BBQ area. There's no need to rush, just gather your thoughts, think "social distance" and get your breath back. When you get to Download, sanitize your hands, remove your tag from your wrist. Your tag will be scanned and a splits print provided. Take your splits print and drop your tag and strap in the crate. Make your way back to your car. Have a safe journey home.
Results and Routegadget will be available on the SOC club website.
