Map/Terrain
Scale 1:7500 ; 5m contours Size - A4
Map updated in Spring 2023; printed on waterproof paper

Longleat woods is one of, if not the, longest established area of continuous cover forestry in the country. This means unless disease hits, there is never any clear felling. As a result, the woodlands are very varied in age and species giving different parts of the wood very different characters and runnability. There are plenty of rhododendron thickets, often penetrated by sinuous paths, as well as rough open areas dominated by bracken and recently planted young trees. The woods are home to some magnificent Giant Redwoods including the second largest in Europe.

Shear Water Woods are very popular with a range of users: dog walkers, horse riders, mountain bikers and joggers. As a result, in addition to the already detailed network of tracks and rides there are numerous smaller paths of varying levels of definition. The mapper’s work, augmented by more recent additions has aimed to capture the most used paths but others develop on what seems to be an almost weekly basis. Similarly, hides appear and collapse over short time scales and every named storm (and others) seems to fell more trees so creating additional rootstocks. We have done our best to map the more recent changes in the vicinity of controls.
Map notation:
Hides are depicted by a Black cross
Root stocks are depicted by a Green cross

The decision will also be posted in Assembly.
• Ticks. Ticks are omnipresent, and tick-borne disease is a risk, albeit a small one. Apart from abiding by the full body cover rule, you should examine yourselves and your children carefully for ticks after your run. Lyme disease is a particularly unpleasant condition which can be caused by tick bites. Go to http://www.lymediseaseaction.org.uk for more information on Lyme disease and its symptoms.
• Solo runners. If you are travelling and running alone, you may wish to leave details of yourself and your car with enquiries.
